Top Things to Do in Bangkok: From Street Food to Elephants and Rooftop Bars
Bangkok is a vibrant city packed with unique experiences, ranging from exotic street food to cultural attractions and thrilling activities. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, there’s no shortage of exciting things to do. Here’s a guide to some of my favorite experiences in this bustling Thai metropolis!
1. Exotic Street Food: Fried Crickets and Scorpions
One of the highlights of Bangkok’s street food scene is trying something truly exotic. While wandering around Khao San Road, we stopped at a bustling night market, but you can find these cheap vendors all around the city. We took the plunge and tried fried crickets and scorpions. Surprisingly, they were well-seasoned and didn’t have a distinct “bug” taste. The scorpion’s texture was a bit mushy and unpleasant, but the crickets were much better—crunchy and surprisingly tasty! Rating: 6.75/10 🦗🦂
2. Elephant World Sanctuary Park
Elephant World Sanctuary Park is a popular tourist attraction in Bangkok. While the experience was fun—riding, bathing, and playing with the elephants—there are better sanctuaries in Chiang Mai if you’re looking for a more authentic experience. That said, the elephants are such sweet, gentle creatures, and my favorite part was being lifted by the elephant’s trunk (safely assisted by the trainers, of course). 🐘💕
3. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
Visiting the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is a truly unique experience. While it may not be the most glamorous market, the rich culture makes up for it. You’ll get a private boat and sailor to take you around the canals where you’ll find vendors selling everything from fresh food to handmade goods and even beer! Along the way, there are stops at a traditional Thai village where you can meet and support Kayan tribeswomen who wear neck rings. Oh, and don’t forget to snap a picture with the random liger hanging out at one of the stops. 🛶🍜🦁
4. Vertigo and Moon Bar: Rooftop Dining with a View
For a more upscale experience, head to Vertigo and Moon Bar, a bougie rooftop bar perched 61 floors above Bangkok. The panoramic 360-degree views are absolutely stunning, and the atmosphere is perfect for an evening out. There’s also a sky deck with a glass floor where you can take photos and feel like you’re floating above the city. 🌇🍸
5. Temple Visits: Respect the Culture
You don’t have to be Buddhist to visit a temple in Bangkok, but you do need to be respectful and conservative in your dress and behavior. Some temples have an entrance fee, but the breathtaking architecture is worth it. Visiting these sacred spaces provides insight into Thailand’s rich cultural and religious heritage. 🕌🙏
Popular temples in Bangkok:
- Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho)
- Grand Palace
- Wat Arun
- Giant Buddha in Pattaya
- Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya
6. Bangkok’s Delicious Restaurants
I don’t remember the exact names of the restaurants I visited in Bangkok, as a local tour guide was showing us around his more low-key favorite spots. But let’s be real, its Thailand — anywhere you choose will be incredible! The authentic food is next-level, and you can find delicious meals in even the most casual spots. Plus, Thai-flavored snacks are everywhere—grab some at any convenience store and you’ll never go hungry. 🍜🍢
7. Tuk Tuk Adventures
No trip to Bangkok is complete without hopping on a Tuk Tuk, which is essentially a fun little tricycle! These colorful vehicles are a blast to ride in and a great way to get around the city. Just be ready for a thrilling experience in the chaotic traffic of Bangkok. 🚖💨
8. Khao San Road: The Heart of Bangkok’s Nightlife
Khao San Road is the place to be when the sun sets. The area comes alive with neon lights, street vendors, and lively bars. During the day, you’ll find shops and stalls selling exotic street food, but at night, it’s an entirely different vibe. This vibrant street is perfect for a night out on the town. 🌙🍻
9. Thai Massages: A Relaxing yet Intense Experience
Thai massages in Bangkok are a whole experience in themselves. They can be more intense than your average deep tissue massage, but the results are worth it. You’ll feel relaxed and refreshed afterward, and the best part? The prices are incredibly affordable, which is why I went for a 2-hour massage. 😌💆♀️
10. Frost Magical Ice of Siam: A Cool Experience (Literally)
I was excited to check out Frost Magical Ice of Siam during my trip to Bangkok. It’s an ice bar and museum all in one, where you can explore intricate ice sculptures and chill out in sub-zero temperatures. While ice bars are popular in many major cities, this one is unique because it combines art, culture, and ice. There’s a rage wall you can throw ice at and a slide made of ice. If you’re looking for something a little different and enjoy the chilly vibes, it’s worth a visit. Just be prepared to bundle up 🧊❄️
