Shark Cage Diving in Oahu, Hawaii: An Unforgettable Experience with North Shore Shark Adventures
In 2013, I had the incredible opportunity to go cage diving with sharks in Oahu, Hawaii, with North Shore Shark Adventures—an experience I’ll never forget. If you’ve ever dreamed of encountering these magnificent creatures up close, this thrilling adventure is a must-do for any thrill-seeker visiting the beautiful Hawaiian Islands.
Age Requirements & Experience Needed
The minimum age for shark cage diving in Oahu is 12 years old, though no prior diving experience is required. I was just 17 when I went, and while previous snorkeling experience can be helpful, it’s not a necessity. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert swimmer either—I’m definitely not. All you really need is a sense of adventure and a bit of courage to dive into the Pacific with sharks.
Professional Crew and Safety First
The North Shore Shark Adventures crew was highly professional, experienced, and reassuring. Safety was their top priority, and I always felt secure throughout the experience. The guides provide detailed instructions before you head out to ensure you’re prepared for the encounter.
The Boat Ride: A Thrilling Journey to Shark Territory
The journey begins when you board a small boat at the shore. The boat ride lasts about 30-45 minutes as you head into the middle of the ocean, where the sharks are found. To avoid rough waters, the boat departs early in the morning, but motion sickness is still a concern for some—bring Dramamine if you’re prone to seasickness. The crew provides basic snorkeling equipment like masks and fins, though you’re welcome to bring your own if preferred.
Meeting the Sharks: An Unforgettable Encounter
Once we arrived at the shark diving site, we were surrounded by Galápagos sharks—some of the most awe-inspiring creatures in the ocean. These sharks may resemble great white sharks, but they’re generally not considered dangerous. The crew feeds the sharks to ensure they’re present for the dive, so you’re almost guaranteed a close-up experience with these incredible animals.
The Cage Dive: Safe and Thrilling
The cage itself is large and spacious, with an open top for easy viewing. You’ll have the chance to stick your head out of the water and see the sharks up close from the safety of the cage. While you can extend your limbs out (but why would you?), rest assured that the sharks don’t jump in. They’re wild, but respectful—no need to worry about becoming shark food :p
I spent about 15-20 minutes in the cage, but with the adrenaline rush, it felt much longer. Even though these sharks are wild, the whole experience is incredibly safe, and the crew makes sure everyone feels comfortable.
